Community Engagement

LEC organises initiatives such as refuse collection, presentations of solar stoves and solar lamps in the village of Kaudwane and thus promote the collaboration between LEC and the inhabitants and at the same time sensitises the people for nature conservation issues.

Over the years LEC has concentrated especially on the youth of Kaudwane. The young people are the future of the country and will be making decisions that also concern nature conservation. In 2013 LEC officially “adopted” (Adopt a School”- Initiative) the Primary School in Kaudwane through the Ministry of Education and initiated several projects and actions:

  • School garden with vegetables
  • Conservation Club for pupils
  • Library with books on nature and nature conservation
  • Competition of stories by pupils on wildlife in the region, which are printed in the yearly LEC calendar
  • Excursions to Gabarone as reward for best pupils

LEC also organises a yearly event around the National Independence Day, the Boipusco Conservation Day and supports the yearly Salajwe football tournament.

Clothes at affordable prices are a scarce commodity in Botswana and the people appreciate if they can purchase these cheaply. Therefore for a number of years LEC has been collecting clothes in Europe that are sold in the Itsoseng village shop. This created a job opportunity and the profit goes directly to the school projects. LEC initiated further projects: the Cee Traditional Dancing Group, a chicken farm, documentary evenings and the desert eagles Sport Club with a ladies netball team and a men’s football team.
