LEC NEWS

We had a very fruitful stakeholder meeting this we We had a very fruitful stakeholder meeting this week. In doing so, on the one hand, we expressed our gratitude for their pivotal role in supporting LEC in the implementation of community projects. On the other hand, we talked about the projects in the past year and in the coming year. Of course, all in compliance with COVID- 19 rules. We look forward to further cooperation.

A traditional San hut in the Kalahari of Botswana. A traditional San hut in the Kalahari of Botswana. We work closely with the community because, a conservation project can only be successful if it’s carried long term by the local inhabitants. If people see that nature conservation benefits them as well, they are more willing to actively participate.

In December the tracking team picked up the spoor In December the tracking team picked up the spoor of a group of lions in the northernmost section of our study area. When they finally tracked them down we found it was a group of young adults in the region of 3-4 years of age. Around that age lions will disperse from their natal prides to find territories of their own. We were able to dart and collar one of the males in the group and so now we will be able to collect important information about their dispersal behaviour. We'll keep you updated with their movements over the coming months.

Lions live in prides: Lions are the feline species Lions live in prides: Lions are the feline species with the strongest social behaviors, and they form the largest social groups. Why that? In a heterogeneous landscape where some locations are worth fighting for, lions equipped to behave socially form groups to win and defend the best territories, expand them, and pass them on to female offspring. If so, why aren’t leopards, which share the savanna with lions, also social? Studies by Packer and others indicate that leopards have to put up with “interference competition” from the larger, stronger lions.

Spotlight on another carnivore: The African wild d Spotlight on another carnivore: The African wild dog is a highly social animal, living in packs with separate dominance hierarchies for males and females. They have a higher success rate when it comes to killing prey even though they are smaller than lions and leopards. In Khutse they are rare guests.

Spotted eagle-owls are the most common species of owl found in Southern Africa. Luckily they have a healthy population in most parts of the country.
