Botswana lies in the Southern part of Africa - North of South
Africa and between Namibia and Zimbabwe. 1966 Botswana gained
its independence from the United Kingdom and was one of the
poorest countries in the world. Today - after almost 40 years
of independence and a rapid economic growth - the country is
counted among the most politically stable in Africa. Most of
the country is covered by the harsh semi-desert of the Kalahari.
This arid surface, which is roughly the size of Texas, supports
a population of 1.7 million people. Diamonds and cattle are
the main export goods today.
Our study area measures approximately 38'000 km2 and includes
Khutse Game Reserve, the Southern portion of the Central Kalahari
Game Reserve and the adjacent farmland of the Kweneng district. |
