In spring 2004, we began the project "Help through Self-Help"
with the goal to improve the care and husbandry of horses and donkeys.
Many San in the settlement nearest to us, called Kaudwane, hold
animals with extreme hoof deformation due to wrong handling, negligence
and constant walking in the sand. The animals suffer also from
ulcerating lesions originating from the use of poorly fitting tack.
Animals in this condition are less productive and can not effectively
defend themselves against predators.
To convey knowledge about the appropriate husbandry of horses
and donkeys we created a public performance with teachers and pupils
of Kaudwane primary school and then originated an animal husbandry
project in the village. Two men from Mokolodi Nature Reserve volunteered
to train several villagers in proper animal care. These men are
now trained and are improving the condition and productivity of
the horses and donkeys in the village. Currently, this project
is supported by Leopard Ecology & Conservation. Our long-term
goal is to make this a self-sustaining project, where the wages
of the workers is paid by the people that benefit from this service.
We also plan to introduce other projects under the "Help through
Self-Help" heading. These can bring much needed employment to the
village of Kaudwane.
Information Centre
Our successes thus far have led us to new vision. We plan to build
an information centre in this area where workshops for farmers, school
projects, animal husbandry training programs and information for
tourists on conservation and the beauty of the Kalahari will take
place. |
